The International Centre of Excellence for Education in Mathematics (ICE-EM) was established in 2004 with a grant from the Australian Government to the Australian Mathematical Sciences Institute (AMSI).

AMSI is a consortium comprising the mathematics departments of 28 Australian universities, CSIRO Mathematical and Information Sciences, the Australian Bureau of Statistics and the Australian Mathematics Trust.

ICE-EM works in Australia and internationally to strengthen education in mathematics and its applications at all levels.  It conducts a range of activities to:

  • Enhance mathematics education in schools by producing exemplary teaching materials and associated teacher professional development

  • Provide mathematical education and support for university staff and students, the research sector, industry and government

  • Encourage Australian and overseas students to study the mathematical sciences in Australia

  • Develop productive relationships with individuals and organsiations involved in the mathematical sciences and cognate areas, so as to showcase Australia's expertise.
